@vercel/og is a free, open-source library that renders OG images inside your own functions. VectorFast Render is a hosted API: templates, a shared brand kit, cached signed URLs, and an MCP server for agents. If one Next.js app needs OG images, @vercel/og is often enough.

VectorFast Render is in early access: billing is not connected yet, and API keys are issued to waitlist members as access opens.

## What Vercel OG (@vercel/og) is
@vercel/og is Vercel's open-source library (MPL-2.0) for generating Open Graph images from JSX in your own functions. Next.js App Router ships it as ImageResponse from next/og. It converts HTML and CSS to PNG with Satori and Resvg.

## Side by side
Competitor facts come from official pages opened on 2026-10-30.

| Topic | Vercel OG (@vercel/og) | VectorFast Render |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | A library you run in your own Vercel Functions (Node.js runtime) [Vercel docs: Open Graph (OG) Image Generation] | A hosted rendering API and remote MCP server |
| Price | The library is free and open source; generating images uses your own function usage on your hosting plan (plan prices not compared here) [npm: @vercel/og 1.0.3 (license MPL-2.0)] | Free tier of 100 new renders a month; paid plans from $19 (pre-launch prices) |
| Layout and CSS | Flexbox and a subset of CSS; display: grid does not work [Vercel docs: Open Graph (OG) Image Generation] | Tailwind classes rendered by the Takumi engine; you pick an official template instead of writing layout |
| Fonts | Noto Sans included; other fonts passed in as ttf, otf or woff data [Vercel docs: @vercel/og reference] | Google Fonts named in the brand kit, subset per render; Chinese text falls back to Noto Sans SC |
| Limits | 500 KB bundle including JSX, CSS, fonts and images [Vercel docs: Open Graph (OG) Image Generation] | Sizes are fixed per template; once billing is connected one credit covers a render up to 2400×2400; params have documented length limits |
| Caching | Responses carry Cache-Control: public, immutable, no-transform, max-age=31536000 [Vercel docs: @vercel/og reference] | Edge cache plus R2 keyed by template version, params and brand kit version; signed URLs are immutable |
| Brand consistency across apps | Whatever your code passes in; there is no shared brand kit [Vercel docs: @vercel/og reference] | One versioned brand kit (colors, fonts, logo) used by every render, from code or an AI agent |
| AI agents | Not an agent tool; your code calls it [Vercel docs: Open Graph (OG) Image Generation] | Remote MCP server so Claude or Cursor can render from a prompt |

### VectorFast Render (pre-launch)
| Plan | Price | Allowance |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | 100 new renders a month |

| Growth | $49/month | 6,000 new renders a month (Optional overage $0.012 per render) |

## Choose Vercel OG (@vercel/og) when
- You deploy a Next.js app on Vercel and only need OG images for your own pages.
- You want full control of the layout in your own code and no third-party service in the request path.
- Your traffic fits comfortably in your existing hosting plan, so there is no extra bill.
- You do not need images outside the web app, such as in an AI agent or a CI job.

## Choose VectorFast Render when
- Several apps, scripts and agents need the same on-brand images without each one bundling fonts and layout code.
- You want an AI agent such as Claude or Cursor to make the images, not only your web server.
- You want one brand kit, including a logo traced from PNG to SVG, applied everywhere.
- You render share cards and launch images beyond OG tags, at sizes like 1080×1080.

## FAQ
### Is @vercel/og free?
The library is open source under MPL-2.0. Rendering runs in your own functions, so cost follows your hosting plan's function usage.

### Can I use VectorFast Render with Next.js?
Yes. Put a signed image URL in generateMetadata, or call POST /v1/renders from a server component; see the Next.js OG image guide.

### Does VectorFast Render support CSS grid?
You do not write layout for the official templates; they are built with the Tailwind classes the Takumi engine supports. Custom templates are planned for a later release.
